Black Queens to receive unpaid bonuses today – Sports Ministry assures

The Ministry of Youth and Sports has announced that the Ghanaian women’s national football team, the Black Queens, will receive their outstanding bonuses today, February 22.

The decision comes after public outcry over the government’s failure to pay the team their bonuses for qualifying for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations tournament, where the team is owed approximately $180,000 for six games.

Following a visit to the team’s camp on Wednesday, February 21, the Chief Financial Officer assured the players that all unpaid bonuses would be settled by 13:– GMT on the same day. This payment is seen as a motivating factor before the first leg of their tie against the Coppe Queens of Zambia in the qualifiers for the 2024 Olympic Games.

Meanwhile, Gifty Oware-Mensah, the Chairperson for the Black Queens Management Committee and an Executive Council member of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), suggested that the Black Stars receive better treatment than the Black Queens due to their status as the flagship team of the GFA.

On Friday, February 23, 2024, Ghana will face Zambia in the first leg of the 2024 Olympic Games third-round qualifiers at the Accra Sports Stadium, with kick-off scheduled for 16:00GMT. Nora Hauptle’s side has so far performed well, winning 10 out of 11 matches and scoring 34 goals, also securing qualification for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

Despite their success on the field, the Black Queens are still owed bonuses of $7,500 from qualification matches they played last year.
