The body of a mentally ill woman believed to be in her 50s has been found floating on the Amissah Okye River at Mankessim, in the Central Region.

The deceased was identified as Ama, a mentally ill person who had been a threat to the residents of Edumadze, a community within Mankessim.

The body was discovered on Wednesday morning, January 31, 2024.

Information gathered indicates that the deceased is also a mother of three.

According to eyewitnesses who went to the Amissah Okye River to fetch water, they were thrown into a state of shock when they saw the deceased hands firmly holding a branch of a tree in the river.

The eyewitnesses said they suspected that the deceased, before her death, was attempting to come out of the river by clinging to the branch of the tree.

A team made up of police personnel, environmental health officers, and the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) went to the scene to retrieve the body with the help of the rescue team.

The deceased was wearing a red short-sleeve T-shirt and a black skirt.

The body of Ama has been sent to the Saltpond Government Hospital Morgue for preservation, as the cause of her death is yet to be known.

Residents suspect the woman was thrown into the river at night as she disturbed the community.

Police have commenced investigations into the case.
