CAS upholds appeal by Ashantigold and Inter Allies players against GFA

The Ghana Football Association (GFA)’s punishments against the players involved in the alleged match-fixing incident between AshantiGold and Inter Allies two seasons ago have been reversed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

The verdict, announced today, marks a significant turning point in players’ careers and sets a precedent for future player disputes within the Ghanaian football environment.

For their suspected involvement in influencing the results of a Ghana Premier League encounter on match day 34, which AshantiGold won 7-0, the GFA’s Disciplinary Committee sanctioned 21 players, 14 of whom played for AshantiGold. Hashmin Musah, an Inter Allies player, said that he scored two own goals to thwart the match-fixing scheme in a post-game interview.

Some players were given 30-month bans for their role in fixing the game while others received a 48-month ban.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) verdict states that the Ghana Football Association should pay each player $345.77 as compensation.
