‘Celebrity’ pastor Badu Kobi’s football prophesies go over the bar

The founder and general overseer of Glorious Wave Church International, Prophet Emmanuel Badu Kobi, suffered double jeopardy over the weekend as two grand football prophesies he made horribly failed to materialise.

Kobi, one of the many charismatic preachers who have made names for themselves due to highly-publicised predictions and social commentary, took to social media to call early the results of the weekend’s biggest games in world football.

On Sunday, July 11, at 12 midnight Ghana time, Brazil took on Argentina in the final of South America’s Copa America. Later on the same day at 7 pm, Italy played England at the Wembley Stadium in the final of the European Championships.

Along with his own acknowledgement of recording “hours before” the South American final, Kobi told the world his prediction. He said, from the comfort of what seemed like a car:

For the match which will happen tonight, which is between Brazil and Argentina, Brazil will win. Argentina will not win. Messi is part of Argentina. He is a great footballer but the night is not for them. The cup is for Brazil and Brazil will win this cup. That is what the spirit of the Lord has revealed to me…so shall it be. And I am saying this hours before the match is played.

As these things tend to go, the prediction or prophecy only became popular after the foretold event had occurred. La Selecao of Brazil actually lost the game by a lone goal to nil to arch-rivals Argentina. The Albiceleste celebrated their 15th Copa America title and Kobi’s prediction was rubbished.

No sooner had the game ended than the video went viral. The preacher was mocked by many on social media with others calling into question the popularity Kobi continues to enjoy.

Many people’s predictions fail but it would seem it is the spiritual authority claimed by Kobi that made his shaming hard.

After England had lost to Italy on penalties too later on Sunday evening, the second of Kobi’s prophetic pronouncements went viral on Facebook and on Twitter.

Apparently, even after the call on the Brazil-Argentina game had come to nought before Sunday morning church service, the prophet made another call in the presence of his Sunday congregation, claiming to have been inspired by God:

Today, England will beat Italy. I’ve said it again. That is the work of a prophet. You keep saying what the Lord is saying…England will win the cup.

The failure of this call did not go unpunished by the thousands on social media, some of whom wondered why the preacher prophesied again on Sunday morning after Brazil had lost.

Kobi’s popularity does not seem to have waned even after his Ghanaian election calls in 2016 and 2020 failed to materialise. The preacher also claimed he had been told by God that former US President Donald Trump was going to win his 2020 reelection bid.
