COVID-19: Maker’s House Chapel to remain closed

The Maker’s House Chapel, one of Ghana’s biggest churches, has announced that the church will remain closed despite the government easing the coronavirus restrictions on churches.

“Looking at our congregation size, a number of services required,  health of the active players in a service, Overhead cost, Pressure on equipment and facility, The logistics to put in place, [include], writing of names per service and submitting it to the authorities, all the COVID-19 protocols.

“I deem it fit to announce to you that TMH (Destiny Arena) will remain closed for some time until we have clarity and the sanctions relaxed some more. I will entreat all of you to bear the church and its membership in prayer,” the Head Pastor for Maker’s’House Chapel, Dr. Michael Boadi Nyamekye, said in a statement.

President Akufo-Addo, in his 10th televised address to the nation on May 31, 2020, gave religious organizations the green light to hold activities amid the coronavirus pandemic.

According to the President, churches and mosques could begin operating effective Friday, June 5, 2020. They are, however, expected to adhere to the COVID-19 safety protocols such as social distancing and hold services within an hour.

He said the easing of restrictions was phase one of a series of more of such. Nana Akufo-Addo on March 16, 2020, ordered the closure of all educational institutions across the country. All churches, mosques, public and social gatherings such as funerals were also banned due to the outbreak of the novel coronavirus disease, COVID-19.

As of June 1, 2020, Ghana’s total COVID-19 case count stood at 8,070 with 2,947 recoveries.

According to data provided by the Ghana Health Service’s COVID-19 website, the death toll stands at 36.

Per the data, the Greater Accra Regions tops the list of regions in the country with the most COVID-19 cases. The region had recorded 5,616 cases.

The Ashanti Region came second with 1,247 infections, and the Western Region which has been identified as the new hotspot of the virus came third with 421 infections.
