A commercial vehicle driver travelling to Bawku was killed on the spot as armed men attacked his vehicle at Bunduri in the Upper East Region.

Reports indicate that several others sustained injuries in the attack.

The body of the deceased has been deposited in the morgue for preservation.

There have been a series of attacks in the area.

Over 29 people were reportedly killed by armed men in 12 separate incidents on the Pusiga, Gbintiri, Sabongari, Bunkpurugu, Walewale-Bawku, and Bawku-Cinkasse roads in the Upper East and Northeast regions between  September 5, 2022, and  February 8, 2023.

A protracted Bawku ethnic conflict has resulted in the loss of lives and property, making the vibrant business hub municipality a ghost town with high attrition of public sector workers to safer areas to work.

As a result, stakeholders have bemoaned the impact of the conflict on the development of the area and appealed to the government to find a lasting solution to the Bawku ethnic conflict.

The government has also called on the chiefs, elders, opinion leaders, youth and people of the area to exercise restraint in the face of the challenges confronting them and use non-violent means to settle disputes and channel their energies into ensuring peace.

The Upper East Regional Minister, Mr Stephen Yakubu, has also appealed to factions involved in the Bawku chieftaincy conflict to calm down.
