Tragedy struck the London Bridge area in Cape Coast when a building collapsed following hours of heavy rainfall, leading to the death of an elderly woman.
The early-morning incident, which occurred on Saturday, June 21, 2025, caused panic in the community.
Emergency responders from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), National Ambulance Service, National Disaster Management Organisation, and the Police rushed to the scene.
Their quick action helped rescue other individuals believed to be in the building at the time.
According to officials, five people were inside when the structure gave way.
Four were pulled out alive, but sadly, one woman could not be saved and her body was found during the rescue operation.
Residents say they are worried about the state of older buildings in the area, especially during the rainy season.
Many hope this tragic event will lead to better inspection and reinforcement of vulnerable structures.
“I just hope the city takes action to prevent more disasters like this,” said a local shopkeeper who witnessed the aftermath.
The cause of the collapse is under investigation, and city officials are urging residents in similar buildings to report any structural concerns immediately.
Meanwhile, the Cape Coast Metropolitan Chief Executive, George Justice Arthur, visited the site to support the coordination of the rescue efforts.
He assured residents that authorities were working hard to manage the emergency and prevent further casualties.
