The Electoral Commission (EC) has disclosed that special voting for the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections will be held on Monday, December 2, 2024.

The special voting arrangement is intended to accommodate voters performing election-related duties on the main polling day, December 7.

This early voting ensures that these individuals can exercise their right to vote without conflicting with their professional responsibilities during the elections.

This announcement was made by the EC chairperson, Jean Mensa, during a meeting with the national executives of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) and representatives of the security forces in Accra on Tuesday, May 28.

“The special voting will be held on Monday, 2nd December 2024, in all the 275 constituencies in the country,” she stated.

However, the results of the special voting will not be declared until after the general elections.

The special voting includes personnel from the Ghana Armed Forces, National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), National Security, Ghana Immigration Service, Ghana National Fire Service, and Information Services Department.

Additionally, it includes members of the National Ambulance Service, Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority, Prisons Service, Ghana Journalists Association, Ghana Police Service, and the National Media Commission.

In March 2024, the EC announced that it would receive nominations for candidates for this year’s presidential and parliamentary elections from September 9 to 13, a major countdown to the climax of the political season.

This will be followed by the balloting for positions on the presidential ballot paper on September 23, 2024, and the parliamentary balloting on September 24, 2024.

Furthermore, if everything goes according to plan, the EC expects to declare the results of the 2024 presidential polls within three days of the voting exercise.

In its programme of activities for the 2024 general election, the EC will conduct a voters’ registration exercise from May 7 to May 27, 2024, and proceed with a nationwide exercise to replace missing voter ID cards from May 30, 2024.

However, it said, the registration exercise will be preceded by 56 days of public education on the exercise from April 1 to May 26, 2024.

Per the schedule, the EC intends to submit the provisional voters’ register to the political parties between July 9 and 18, 2024, and mount an exhibition of the voter’s register between July 15 and 24, 2024.

The final voter register is expected to be submitted to the political parties between August 30 and September 5, 2024.
