GAF reacts to arrest of ‘soldier’ in attempted mining site robbery

The Ghana Armed Forces(GAF) has denied connection with an alleged soldier who was arrested in Nyamesom near Kwabenakwa in the Ashanti Region on Sunday, March 24, 2024.

It is reported that the suspect, identified as Lance Corporal Eric Opoku, aged 27, and three colleagues, currently on the run stormed the mining site of Nyamesom on March 24, 2024, to extort money from some miners while dressed in military uniforms, with guns, knives, and other offensive weapons.

Eric, allegedly stationed at Airborne-Tamale, claimed he was on fourteen (14) days of leave and decided to visit the site with his colleagues to look for “chop money”.

However, GAF in a statement signed by the Director of Public Relations, Brigadier General Eric Aggrey-Quashie dated March 25, 2024, said it has no ties with the suspect nor has he been deployed for any operation at the said site.

The Armed Forces further urged the public to promptly report suspicious persons in military uniforms to the nearest military unit or police station for the necessary action to be taken.
