The Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) has directed commuters and drivers on the Kasoa-Winneba highway to use an alternative route following the destruction of the Okyereko Bridge.
This comes after the road contractor working on the dualization project on the Kasoa-Winneba highway diverted river Ayensu to make way for a modern bridge.
This caused the river to overflow onto the main highway, causing a major disruption to traffic at Gomoa Okyereko.
As a result, many vehicles and commuters were left stranded.
In a statement dated June 6, 2024, the GHA said the Okyereko bridge has overtopped due to heavy rains and rising water levels in the area.
“In the interim, motorists travelling from Accra to Cape Coast are advised to connect through, Akoti- Ojobi- Winneba Road.
“Motorists from Cape Coast to Accra are also advised to use the Winneba-Ojobi – Akoti Junction on the N1,” the statement directed.
The authority further assured that its engineers and technical team are currently at work to resolve the issue as soon as possible.
“Your cooperation and patience are greatly cherished as we work towards ensuring your safety and the restoration of normal traffic flow,” GHA added.
Meanwhile, the situation has resulted in over 150 homes in Gomoa Mampong being submerged.
Confirming the situation, Gomoa East District National Disaster Management Organisation (NaDMO) Director Robert Hackman said most of the houses in the community have become inaccessible.
This has forced residents to take refuge in local churches while others are struggling to find a safe place.
He said Gomoa Okyereko and five other communities were also likely to flood.
