Ghana FA to announce roadmap for Black Stars’ future after AFCON 2023 exit

The Ghana Football Association has announced the dissolution of Chris Hughton’s led Black Stars technical team following the team’s calamitous performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

The West Africa powerhouse’s hopes of advancing to the knockout stages were slim after a 2-2 draw against Mozambique on Monday night. The elimination was confirmed when Cameroon, coming from behind, defeated Gambia.

This means the Black Stars has suffered a back-to-back group stage elimination from the African Cup of Nations.

In response to the team’s poor showing at the AFCON, the domestic football governing body has disclosed Hughton has been relieved of his post as head coach of the national team.

The former Premier League manager, who was appointed as head coach in February 2023, had a win-loss-draw ratio of 30.77%, 30.77%, and 38.46% in all competitions during his nearly one-year tenure. The team scored 13 goals under his leadership, averaging one goal per match while conceding 16 times.

Hughton’s assistance, George Boateng and Didi Dramani, goalkeepers’ coach Richard Kingston, and other members of the technical team have been shown the exit door.

Meanwhile, the Ghana FA indicated it will provide a roadmap for the future of the national team in the coming days.

The Ghana FA is expected to appoint a new coach to lead the Black Stars following the dissolution of the technical team.
