Ghana Navy personnel test positive for COVID-19
Some personnel of the Ghana Navy in the Western Region have tested positive for the novel coronavirus.
The details are sketchy about the number of soldiers involved, as Flag Officer Commanding of the Western Naval Command, Commodre E. A Kwafo, declined to go into figures.
“I do not want to go to numbers because you may test positive today, in two weeks time you may test negative. And the one who has tested negative today, tomorrow may test negative. So it’s uncertain.”
According to him, all those infected had been isolated and were being treated.
Commodore Kwafo was certain that the personnel got infected in the line of duty
‘Because of the work the Ghana Navy does; inspecting ships at sea, we provide security for the nation at sea. We have to ensure the borders are closed. So we come into contact with various vessels.’
‘We go to sea to make sure that people on board other vessels don’t harm the interest of the state, and by so doing, we expose ourselves,” he told JoyNews
According to him, the command was ensuring that all persons who entered the Naval Base had their temperatures checked and Veronica buckets placed at vantage points, for hand washing.
Commodore Kwafo stated that a Zoomlion disinfection operation was also part of the efforts to protect the personnel from the virus.
