Former Second Lady, Matilda Amissah-Arthur, is asking parents to encourage their children to read by giving them books they can identify with.

The respected librarian said reading gets interesting for children when they are able to identify with the subject of the books.

“If you give children books that is not related to their culture, Books that they cannot identify with, they find it difficult to read,” she said.

Making a case for Ghanaian reading culture in this age of social media influx,  Amissah-Arthur said, “We have a culture of reading, the only problem is that, we’ll like the children to read more by giving them books that they can identify with”.

Speaking exclusively to The Ghana Report on the fringes of Investigative journalist, Manasseh Azure Awuni’s book,‘The Fourth John’ launch, in Accra on Wednesday, she encouraged young people to develop the act of writing.

“Often time we tend to think, writing is for some group of people…. We tend to shy away from writing about people who are alive.  Normally, when they are dead and you write about them, they can’t challenge you” she explained.

The book, ‘The Fourth John’ talks about the Presidency of John Dramani Mahama and other issues related to governance in the Fourth Republic.

It has  392 pages and 33 chapters.
