The Qwabi River gods at Atafoa in the Ashanti Region are reportedly angry over the disposal of dead bodies and sex in the river.
The chiefs of the town claim the angry river god has vowed to kill dozens of people if residents continue to pollute the river with dead bodies and other materials that threaten its life span.
According to them, in a revelation to some fetish priest in the area, the river god vehemently warned that anyone who jokes with the river would pay with their life.
Speaking to the media on Monday, July 3, 2023, the linguist for the chief of Atafoa, Nana Kwame Appiah, said individuals who were recently killed in the river were all signs of anger by the river.
“This river serves as the main source of potable water for residents in the region, yet people throw dirt in the river”.
“The river god revealed to the fetish priest that some unscrupulous people bury dead bodies in the river, while others have sex in the river, acts that should be condemned, “ he added.
It is reported that five people have recently drowned in the river after torrential rains in the Ashanti Region.
Three of the five persons have been confirmed dead after retrieving their bodies, while two are still missing.
Nana Kwame Appiah added that the river has revealed that those two bodies will never be found as a sign of anger.
Following the incident, the Chief of Atafo, Nana Owusu Ansah II, and his elders poured libation at the river bank to appease the gods.
