GPL: Kotoko beat AshGold to go top

Asante Kotoko managed to keep their title hopes alive when they beat AshantiGold 1-0 in a fierce Match Week 28 fixture at the Len Clay Stadium.

The match dubbed ‘The Ashanti derby’ saw the display of quality football from both sides eager to win, Kotoko needed the win to move top of the table while AshGold were hoping for a result that will keep them above relegation.

The Porcupine Warriors won the day, thanks to a goal from Brazilian midfielder Fabio Gama.

Gama found a way past the opposition goalkeeper Mensah in the 23rd minute, when he headed home from a cross from Patrick Asmah giving his team the advantage going into the first half break.

In the second half, the two teams created opportunities to find the back of the net but it was not to be and Kotoko were able to grab the victory.

The results means the Miners have lost three consecutive games in the league for the first time this season, piling pressure on stand-in coach Thomas Duah.

Kotoko are now top of the league table with 50 points while the Miners drop to 11th with 34 points and are just 3 points adrift of the relegation zone.
