Hidden Explosives Retrieved From Another Quarry Site In Shama

Source The Ghana Report

The Shama District Security Council (DISEC) and the Minerals Commission have discovered some quantities of explosives and ammonium substances in trenches around the Anto Aboso quarry site in the Western Region.

The discovery was made after an intelligence-led investigation by the team.

According to the Assistant Manager at the Minerals Commission, Francis Annobil Jnr, the explosives were found buried under sand in a bushy area that hosts about six quarries.

This follows an explosion at the Omni Quarry site on Saturday, September 9, resulting in five lives being lost.

The explosion also affected nearby communities in the Shama District, destroying houses and shops.

Following the discovery, the Shama District Chief Executive (DCE), Ebenezer Dadzie, told journalists that this posed a huge risk to the communities in the area.

He also charged the residents to report suspicious activities of operators in the area as the assembly works to rid the community of such substances to avert more disasters.

Meanwhile, the Minerals Commission has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the explosion.

A statement from the commission also revealed that the company in charge of the quarry site lacked the requisite approvals to conduct any activity on the premises.

The statement read, “Pending a thorough investigation into the cause of the recent explosion, it has come to light that the enterprise was devoid of a lease, approval, or permit to engage in any operation at the site”.
