Hooliganism in Ghanaian Senior High Schools (SHS) is a growing concern, with recent incidents of violence, vandalism, and even killings.
This issue has sparked public discourse, highlighting the need for effective measures to curb these behaviours among students.
In less than four months, seven violent clashes have erupted in some Ghanaian SHSs, calling for the need to strengthen security and discipline in the various second-cycle institutions.
While student conflicts are not new, the frequency and intensity of these recent clashes have been alarming.
These violent incidents have reignited discussions about student indiscipline and the potential reintroduction of corporal punishment as a means to combat these issues.
Here, The Ghana Report takes a look at seven of these incidents recorded from January to April 2025.
- Clash between Kinbu Secondary Technical and Accra Technical Training Centre
A clash between students of Kinbu Senior High School (SHS) and the Accra Technical Training Centre (ATTC) in January 2025 turned violent, allegedly leaving one student severely injured.
According to reports, the injured student was slashed in the face with a machete during the altercation.
The cause of the clash was unclear, but it is believed to have been sparked by a long-standing rivalry between the two institutions.

- Kumasi Technical Institute and Kumasi Anglican Senior High
Students of Kumasi Technical Institute (KTI) and Kumasi Anglican Senior High School (KASS) in the Ashanti region on January 30, 2025, engaged in a violent clash, leading to vandalism of property on both campuses.
In a violent reprisal, the rampaging students burnt car tyres and hurled stones and other objects. They destroyed four private vehicles on the campus of KASS, the school gate, a billboard and a notice board at KTI.
Principal of KTI, Gabriel Kingsford Osei, alleged that the students of Kumasi Anglican started attacking KTI with stones and machetes to vandalise their school billboard on Thursday night.
But a tutor at KASS, Rev Father Kenneth Collins Owusu, also noted that the clash could be a fallout from arguments at the ongoing inter-school athletics event in Kumasi.
The Ashanti regional education directorate and the police swiftly intervened to find a lasting solution to the situation.
No student was arrested.
- One student stabbed following a violent clash in Salaga SHS
In early February 2025, a horrific incident unfolded at Salaga Senior High School, located in East Gonja Municipality of the Savannah Region, as a violent altercation among some students left one person with multiple stab wounds.
The brawl, described as a chaotic free-for-all fight, created unrest on campus, prompting a swift response from law enforcement.
During the operation, police recovered a locally manufactured pistol and a round of ammunition from the scene.
The police also arrested twenty students on the spot for causing chaos on campus.
- Violent clash between Islamic SHS and local residents
A violent clash erupted on February 14, 2025, between students of Islamic Senior High School (ISSEC) in Kumasi and local youth near the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.
The fierce confrontation saw both groups hurling stones and objects at each other, damaging vehicles and causing injuries to bystanders.
In viral videos, individuals were seen aggressively throwing stones as others fled in different directions to escape the chaos.

- Sekode Senior High School incident
The Sokode Senior High Technical School in the Volta Region was recently shut down indefinitely following a violent clash between students and residents, which left several people injured.
Reports that surfaced indicated that the tensions escalated after a group of students was attacked while they were out in the community buying food.
To seek revenge, they returned to the school and rallied their fellow students for a counterattack.
Unfortunately, upon their return to campus, the students were ambushed by local youths and members of the Asafo Company.
This confrontation resulted in more injuries and damage to property, including that of a staff member’s vehicle.
- Christian Methodist SHS assault incident
On Thursday, February 27, a group of about 30 students of Christian Methodist Senior High School (SHS) at Weija brutally attacked a colleague in a ‘jungle justice’ style near New Aplaku in the Ga South Municipality of the Greater Accra Region.
The victim was accused of stealing a mobile phone.
He was able to break free from their grip and fled into a nearby shop to escape their onslaught.
The angry students still pursued him into the shop, vandalised properties and stabbed a bystander who attempted to help in the eye.
Other members of the community then shielded the brutalised student and fought off the angry students.
However, the angry students returned on Friday, February 28, with weapons to launch another attack on the community members.
In a viral video, the brutalised student is seen narrating the incident to his rescuers.
He also insisted he did not steal the phone.

- Shooting of two students by a classmate at Adventist SHS
The latest violent incident is the shooting of two students at the Seventh Day Adventist Secondary School in Bantama in the Ashanti Region on Friday, April 4, 2025.
According to reliable sources within the school, the incident occurred during break time when Bernard Amoabeng, a form two student, brought a gun to school.
An argument reportedly ensued among the students over whether the weapon was functional.
In an attempt to prove it was, Amoabeng allegedly fired the gun, accidentally shooting and injuring two students.
One of the students, identified as Penamang, sustained a critical gunshot wound to her forehead. She was initially rushed to Kwadaso Hospital but was later referred to Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital due to the severity of her condition.
The Suame Police arrested Amoabeng and initiated a full investigation into the incident.
Meanwhile, the family of the 16-year-old girl Penamang is passionately appealing for financial assistance to save their daughter from going blind.
