Immigration Officer remanded in connection to death of alleged smuggler

Source The Ghana Report

The Ho Magistrate Court has remanded Isaac Oppong, an immigration officer stationed at the Holuta-Klave Border in the Ho West District.

The officer has been hauled before the court for his alleged involvement in the death of a 25-year-old motorrider, Christian Dake.

Dake allegedly smuggled cooking oil through an unauthorized route into the country.

According to the prosecution, Dake failed to stop as instructed, prompting a pursuit by Officer Oppong.

The prosecution, led by Sergeant Otibil Gyan, said that a confrontation occurred during the attempted arrest, resulting in the accidental discharge of Officer Oppong’s firearm.

Christian Dake was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Ho Teaching Hospital.

Despite efforts from Oppong’s legal team to secure his remand at the Immigration Headquarters in Accra, the court rejected the plea, emphasizing the importance of an unhindered investigation process.

The case has been adjourned to March 19, 2024, allowing time for a thorough examination of the circumstances surrounding the incident.
