Increase in covid-19 cases, a wake-up call to everyone – Mahama

President Nana Akufo-Addo has fallen short of combating the coronavirus in Ghana as cases continue to soar, former President John Dramani Mahama has observed.

Mr Mahama believed the President failed to implement certain measures that would have curtailed the spread.

Almost three months after the country recorded its first case,  the country’s total case as of June 10, was  10, 201, with the active cases pegged at 6, 398. Recoveries were 3, 755 and deaths 48.

Delivering an address at the 28th anniversary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), the flagbearer of the party said, “This administration, led by Nana Akufo-Addo, has failed abysmally in creating proper public awareness of the COVID-19 disease.”

‘Let no one assume NDC will accept flawed election results’ – Mahama

According to him, the evidence was at the markets and public places where “social distancing is not observed, and many people go to public places without masks”.

Mr Mahama said the increase in cases was a wake-up call to everyone to tighten health protection for family and friends.

He advised the public to implement all protocols, especially washing of hands with soap under running water, the use of hand sanitiser and keeping of distance between people.

He said reusable masks should be washed with hot water and pressed with hot iron  every day before using again.

He advocated community ownership of the COVID-19 fight so that leaders in communities can help against stigmatisation and contact tracing.

The government outlined several objectives towards mitigating the coronavirus pandemic.

It included limiting the spread with interventions such as the closure of borders, a three-week partial lockdown in some selected areas, distribution of PPEs, the mandatory wearing of masks and social distancing.

Government’s other focus was providing excellent care for the sick, which included increased testing centres and increased health facilities.

Additionally, the government targeted socio-economic elevation with funds for small and medium scale businesses, subsidies for utilities and other interventions.
