Kumasi zoo performs first Caesarian section on Monkey

A Mona monkey at the Kumasi Zoological Gardens has given birth to a baby male primate through a Caesarian Section.

This is because the Mona monkey had difficulty in normal delivery due to its very narrow birth canal.

Speaking to theghanareport.com, the Zoo manager, Dr. Meyir Y. Ziekah said this was the first major surgery the facility had performed on any of its animals.

According to him, the lack of proper tools and equipment to perform the surgery made the task a bit challenging.

“We had been doing some minor surgeries, but I will say this is our first major surgery. We didn’t have all the right tools and equipment, but we had to save the monkey and its baby. So, with my experience, we managed to use the tools and equipment we had like that.”

Dr. Ziekah said despite these challenges, the Kumasi zoo was undergoing some renovation works which will see to the provision of ultra modern facilities to aid in the discharge of their mandate.

“As and when we see the challenges, we fix them. As for the logistical constraints, they are everywhere. The place (zoo) is being renovated. When it’s done, we will have all the necessary tools and equipment needed for our work,” he told theghanareport.com.

Meanwhile, the first time mother and baby monkey are currently recuperating and doing well at the Kumasi Zoo nursery.

The Caesarian Section was performed by Dr. Meyir Y. Ziekah, who is a veterinary doctor and Manager of the Kumasi Zoo.
