Legal Battle Against Jomoro MP Rages On.

Member of Parliament (MP) for Jomoro, on the ticket of the Opposition NDC, Dorcas Affo-Toffey, whose eligibility to contest the 2020 parliamentary seat is being challenged, was grilled in the Sekondi High Court today.

The last time the court sat on the case was about two months ago.

Prior to the adjourned date, the first respondent or the MP, Dorcas Affo-Toffey, an Ivorian legal expert and the Electoral Commission, were supposed to mount the witness box for cross-examination on July 18, 19, and 20, 2022.

However, while the petitioner, Joshua Emuah Kofie was in court with his lawyers on July 18, 2022, the first respondent was not in court but was represented by one Emmanuel Benle.

At the sitting, it was disclosed by the presiding judge that lawyers for the first respondent had sent a letter for re-adjournment, which was accepted by the court and all parties involved in the suit.

The dates suggested by the first respondent and her lawyers were October 10, 11, and 12, 2022.

It is expected that all cross-examinations would be completed within three days.

When the MP mounted the witness box for the first time before the case was adjourned, she was grilled by Bright Adjekum, counsel for the petitioner in the case, over the MP’s Ivorian passports and her alleged two dates of birth.

The petitioner, Joshua Emuah Kofie of Nuba-Mpataba in the Jomoro Constituency, last year filed a suit challenging the Jomoro MP to produce evidence of her renounced dual citizenship.

According to the petitioner, Dorcas Affo-Toffey was not qualified to contest in the 2020 parliamentary elections as she held dual citizenship at the time.
