Mad rush for fuel as tanker crashes along Accra-Tema Motorway

Residents and drivers along the Accra-Tema motorway were seen risking their lives to scoop fuel gushing out of a crashed tanker on Friday morning.

It is reported that a Dukes Petroleum fuel tanker transporting diesel from Tema towards Accra skidded off the road and overturned in an attempt to swerve a saloon car on May 12.

The accident reportedly occurred about 200 meters before the toll booth at the Accra end, spilling fuel onto the highway.

Some drivers plying the road parked their cars to fetch the fuel with the excuse that they couldn’t watch the fuel go to waste.

“Times are hard, and we couldn’t just watch on, so I had to fetch the fuel for my car,” a driver said.

Some motorists stated their action was risky but argued that the possibility of an explosion from a diesel tanker was minimal compared to petrol.

The fuel covered the road making it slippery for motorists to use that section. This posed a threat to motorists as the accident caused vehicular traffic.

The police also came to the scene, and investigations are ongoing.
