A suspected thief has been handed over to the police by market authorities for stealing dried salted tilapia, popularly known as ‘koobi’, at the Obuasi Central Market in the Ashanti Region.

The suspect, Paa Yaw, hails from Mankessim in the Central Region and had travelled to Obuasi to work but ended up in handcuffs.

Information gathered indicates that a night watchman on patrol at the market caught him in the act.

The watchman saw the suspect jump from a storey building and pursued him.

The watchman, wielding a locally manufactured security weapon, overpowered the suspect, demobilized him and retrieved the ‘koobi’.

In a viral video circulating on social media, the suspect could be seen tied to a pole attached to a stall with heavy chains and a padlock awaiting actions by market authorities.

The ‘koobi’ thief is believed to be a member of a notorious gang that has made it their priority to rob markets in the Obuasi township.

On Thursday, July 20, 2023, he was handed over to the police who are currently investigating the matter.
