Marcus Rashford awarded Carabao Cup final goal

The EFL have now awarded Manchester United’s second goal in Sunday’s Carabao Cup final to in-form striker Marcus Rashford.

Rashford entered the game in the best goalscoring form of his career and, after Casemiro opened the scoring midway through the first half, thought he had added a second after his strike nestled in the back of the net.

The goal was initially credited as a Sven Botman own goal after the Dutchman’s deflection saw the ball loop over goalkeeper Loris Karius, but Rashford insisted he would claim it as his own anyway.

Asked by Sky Sports about the goal, Rashford laughed: “I’m claiming it! I don’t know what’s going on but I’m claiming it.”

Now, the EFL have confirmed the goal has been awarded to Rashford, who takes his tally for the season to 25 goals.

It was Rashford’s sixth in six games in the Carabao Cup and continues his prolific run in front of goal. The United academy graduate has only failed to score in four games across all competitions since the start of 2023.

Rashford now moves one step closer to becoming the first United player to reach 30 goals in all competitions since Robin van Persie did so in 2012/13.
