A matron at the Asukawkaw Senior High School(SHS) has been arrested for allegedly stealing food items meant for the school in the Krachi East Municipality of the Oti Region.
According to Mr Mark Oduro, the assembly member of Asukawkaw Electoral Area, Madam Cynthia Delarko, was arrested after a tip-off from some concerned citizens.
She was then handed over to Katanga police for further investigations.
Mr Oduro said the food items in her possession were bags of rice, bags of beans, canned tomatoes in large and small sizes, and a gallon of Frytol vegetable oil.
He also disclosed that it was not Madam Delarko’s first time carting away food consignment from the school. However, previous ones went unnoticed.
The assemblyman said a plan was then hatched to track the subsequent movement of food consignment meant to feed students.
Mr John Sitsofe Nukunu, Headmaster of the School, has remained tight-lipped about the development and has declined to speak to journalists.
Meanwhile, Katanga Police Commander, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Kennedy Frimpong, confirmed the arrest and said her docket was being put together.
It will be recalled that five persons, including a matron and a landlord, were arrested by the police in the Atebubu-Amantin Municipality in the Bono East Region for allegedly stealing foodstuff meant for feeding SHS students in April 2023.
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Atebubu-Amantin Municipality, Edward Owusu, confirmed that the arrest was due to their involvement in sabotaging the government’s free SHS policy.
Twenty-four bags of beans, 40 bags of rice, oil and tin tomatoes were stolen from Atebubu SHS and Konkrompe SHS.
According to the MCE, he received a tip-off that the school’s food was stolen and stored in a nearby house.
