Meet Akua Bronya, other Christmas babies delivered on Xmas Day

While some are unwrapping lovely presents ranging from chocolates, bags, shoes and in some cases, plasma television this Christmas, some Ghanaian mothers are rather wrapping their ‘bundles of joy’ in white lace cloth.

It was the greatest Christmas Day gift these families could have wished for – with several newborns arriving on the day Christians worldwide celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.

Between the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital and the 37 Military Hospital, 36 babies arrived on the day the world is celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ.

Mothers at the 37 Military Hospital and the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital were beaming with smiles when The Ghana Report.com team visited the hospital.

At Korle Bu maternity ward, new parents were cuddling their little bundles of joy on Christmas and Boxing Day.

The Ghana Report.com team visited the Korle Bu and 37 maternity ward to meet the city’s latest additions and spoke to proud parents and midwives who helped bring the babies into the world.

In a conversation with Sergeant Amoakohene Cynthia and Mrs Evelyn Afful at the 37 Military Hospital maternity ward

Noella, as affectionately called by her mother, is the first Christmas baby to be born at the 37 Military Hospital coming into the world at 6:30 am.

The little bundle of joy is the second baby for Mrs. Evelyn Afful and her husband.

“I am very happy now, these nine months have not been easy. But I am feeling good now and we are going to celebrate Christmas tomorrow if I can go home, “she said exuding exuberance.

The mother of Akua Bronya, Sargeant Amoakohene Cynthia who spoke to the team in Twi calls her little girl ‘Akua Bronya’ to signify her birth on a special day.

A cheerful Cynthia when asked why she wants to call her child Bronya said “It would let people know she was born on Christmas day.

Sergeant Amoakohene recounting how her journey has been since her pregnancy and the antenatal rounds said was she’s grateful to God for the miracle.

Madam Mariama Yussif delivered a strong healthy baby boy she wants to call Imam Yussif because she wants him to become an Imam when he grows up.

“We’ve been in the labour ward, screaming and turning, it’s wonderful to know it’s over now. We couldn’t have wished for a better Christmas Day, ” they said in unison.

In all, a total of 10 babies were born on Christmas Day; five males and five females.

Out of the total number, seven were through a Caesarian session and three were delivered naturally.

Between the two major hospitals, Korle Bu recorded the highest number of news borns with 26 on Christmas Day and nine on Boxing Day respectively as of about 11.30 a.m on Thursday.

Madam Lawrencia Gapko who is with the Korle Bu Hospital Public Relations unit said a total of 36 babies were delivered on the two holidays.

Out of that number, the hospital records 11 males and 15 females newborns on Christmas Day.

Interestingly, a set of twins were born on December 25, 2019, with a perfect number of two males two females.

On Boxing Day when gifts are exchanged,  heaven smiled on nine parents as three male and six female babies were born.

Unline the conventional naming when parents set dates to name their children, some parents already had names for their day old babies.

When it comes to the names of children, parents and loved ones take keen interest and are very selective in their choices.

Two parents who will like to name their children after strong and successful women.

Mrs Comfort Manu Adwubi, who delivered at 7:30 am at Korlebu says she is going to call her child Hilary.

The ‘new Santa Hilary’ is named after the American politician, diplomat, lawyer, writer, and Former First Lady, Hilary Clinton.

Unlike the new Christmas baby, Hilary Clinton was born on October 26, 1947.

Asked why she wants her daughter to be called Hilary, Madam Adwubi said she likes the name and she wants her child to do great things when she grows up.

Mrs Angelina Addo wants to call her little bundle Michelle after ‘Michelle Obama, ‘ wife of Barack Obama.
