The Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu, wants the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to provide an investigative report to Parliament on the robbery attack and attempted assassination of Nhyiaeso MP, Kennedy Kankam.

Over the weekend, three armed men stormed the residence of the MP in Kumasi at gunpoint but spared his life after robbing him of several items.

But addressing the matter in Parliament, Haruna Iddrisu underscored the need for a report on the unfortunate incident.

“We need to know from the Inspector General of Police what the report on Kennedy Kankam is. What is the source and motivation? We need to probe it further and I think the Minister of Interior is capable of getting his men in the area to tell us.  This is to guarantee further the safety and security of Members of Parliament.”

Police vow to arrest robbers

Though the police in the Ashanti Region have begun investigations into a case, no culprits have been arrested.

The police also said that the MP in his statement said the armed men who were at his residence for about three hours subjected him and his family to inhumane treatment.

The MP also alleged that the armed men also said they were there to kill him, but they had forgiven him.

Ashanti Regional Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Godwin Ahianyo said the police are looking into the claim of assassination attempt although current investigations are focused mainly on the robbery.

He further gave assurances that the police are working hard to arrest the perpetrators of the crime.

“We are taking some leads and we hope and pray that very soon we will be able to get the perpetrators arrested. Some CID men were at his residence to pick some leads. We are also pleading with the public to help us by way of giving us information. We are assuring the general public that in due time we will get the perpetrators who committed this act arrested and made to the face the full rigors of the law,” he said.

MPs renew calls for enhanced security

Meanwhile, Members of Parliament have renewed calls for enhanced security.

Majority Leader, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, says the government must take urgent steps to beef up security for Members of Parliament.

“The country should make a determined effort to provide security for Members of Parliament. We must be very decisive about this because we cannot continue to endanger the lives of Members of Parliament. Many of us have suffered robberies, highway robberies because many of us are not accompanied by security personnel. Two of our colleagues were attacked by armed robbers at Nsawam and Suhum, one other, between Koforidua and Bonsu junction. Two of them were shot at but the robbers missed it. Mr. Speaker, I think the time has come for the state to take a decision on the security of Members of Parliament,” he said.
