NDC Leads 5 Political Parties To Sue EC Over Limited Voter Registration

Source The Ghana Report

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) and four other political parties have filed a suit against the Electoral Commission(EC) at the Supreme Court over its decision to hold the upcoming limited voter registration exercise at its 268 district offices.

The four other parties are the Convention People’s Party (CPP), the All People’s Congress(APC), the Liberal Party of Ghana(LPG) and the Great Consolidated Popular Party(GCPP).

According to the parties, the EC’s decision may deprive many eligible voters of their right to register and to vote.

The parties have duly filed an Application for Interlocutory Injunction to restrain the EC from proceeding with the announced limited voter registration exercise pending the final determination of the substantive matter.

The chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Adukwei Mensa, announced that the limited voter registration exercise would take place at the 268 District Offices of the Commission and hoping to register 1,350,000 new voters by the close of the exercise scheduled for Tuesday, September 12 to Monday, October 2, 2023.

Despite many calls from the political parties, the EC has defended their decision.

The commission said it appreciated the concerns about the accessibility of its offices in some remote communities, but it cannot vary its plans due to time constraints.
