Nigeria Coach Eguavoen resigns after Ghana defeat

Head Coach of Nigeria’s Super Eagles, Augustine Eguavoen, has resigned from his post following the side’s failure to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Eguavoen was appointed on an interim basis in December 2021 as a replacement for coach Gernot Rohr, who was sacked due to unsatisfactory performance during the first round of FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

The 55-year-old gaffer earlier resigned after the team’s Round 16 exit at the AFCON in Cameroon after being knocked out by Tunisia.

However, he was rehired to take charge of the final playoff round against Ghana.

He has since received backlash due to the inability of the Super Eagles to qualify for their seventh World Cup appearance.

Nigeria could not book a place at the world tournament at the expense of bitter rivals Ghana, who qualified by virtue of the away goal rule after drawing 1-1 at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja with the first leg in Ghana ending goalless.

He has now resigned from his role as head coach but reports say he might return to his former role as the Technical Director of the Nigeria Football Federation.
