Police ban party paraphernalia at Oforikrom voter registration centre
The Manhyia Divisional Police Command in the Ashanti Region has prohibited the display and use of political party paraphernalia at the Oforikrom Voter Registration Center.
This latest development follows a reaction by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the constituency expressing discontentment with its main opponent, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) sharing branded exercise books in the ongoing registration process.
According to the police, the prohibition of political party paraphernalia at the registration center will help to prevent potential conflicts between political parties.
In a brief meeting between the police and both parties, the NPP admitted to distributing branded exercise books to registrants but denied allegations of money peddling.
The NDC says it won’t allow the NPP to get away with it if it tramples the electoral laws.
Both parties agreed to adhere to the directive from the police to refrain from using any paraphernalia at the registration centre.
They urged their members to fully participate in the limited voter registration exercise to be able to cast their votes in the 2024 general elections.
The registration began on May 7 and will last for 21 days.
The EC intends to submit the provisional voter register to the political parties between July 9 and 18, 2024, and mount an exhibition of the voter register between July 15 and 24, 2024.
The final voter register is expected to be submitted to the political parties between August 30 and September 5, 2024.
