Premier League footballer arrested on suspicion of rape

A Premier League footballer has been arrested on suspicion of rape, according to reports.

The Telegraph report that the player, who is said to be a full international and cannot be named for legal reasons, was detained in north London and is currently in custody over an attack which is alleged to have taken place at the end of June.

“On 4 July, an allegation of rape of a woman in her 20s was reported to police,” the Metropolitan Police confirmed in a statement. “It was reported the alleged rape happened in June 2022.”

The man was arrested “at an address in Barnet on suspicion of rape and taken into custody where he remains”. “Enquiries into the circumstances are ongoing,” the statement added.

The player’s club have declined to comment on the arrest and it’s currently unclear whether he will take part in pre-season. The individual is also said to have been in line to play at this winter’s World Cup in Qatar.
