Rawlings Foundation petitions Speaker over Zanetor ‘attack’

The J.J. Rawlings Foundation has expressed deep shock and disappointment over derogatory comments allegedly made by a New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) about the late former President Jerry John Rawlings and his daughter, Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, the current MP for Klottey Korle.

During parliamentary proceedings on February 4, a male voice was heard shouting, “Daughter of a murderer, sit down!”.

This was directed at Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings.

In response, the foundation submitted a petition to Speaker Alban Bagbin, condemning the “toxic” and “false” remarks as damaging to the reputation of parliament and the nation.

The foundation argued that the comments were part of a deliberate attempt by a small group of MPs to foster a divisive atmosphere, using parliament as a platform for inflammatory rhetoric.

It also defended President Rawlings, emphasising his crucial role in shaping Ghana’s democratic system and noting his leadership, sacrifices, and commitment to the country’s socio-political and economic recovery.

“President Rawlings was instrumental in restoring Ghana’s stability and is globally respected for his anti-corruption efforts,” the foundation stated.

“To reduce his legacy to a moment of careless commentary is both dishonest and unjust.”

The foundation also strongly defended Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, highlighting her effectiveness as an MP since 2017, having successfully retained her seat three times despite being in the opposition.

It denounced the attempt to silence her in Parliament, labelling it a “clear display of misogyny and disrespect.”

The foundation expressed concern that such behaviour undermines the integrity of Parliament, an institution meant to honour Ghana’s leaders, and called for swift action to hold the offending MP accountable.

They urged Parliament to demand a retraction of the defamatory comments and take necessary steps to uphold the dignity of the House.
