Roma keen on Mason Greenwood after Man Utd exit decision

Roma are one of a number of clubs to have contacted Manchester United in regards to signing Mason Greenwood.

The Red Devils confirmed on Monday that Greenwood will leave the club by mutual agreement following the conclusion of a six-month internal investigation into his conduct.

Greenwood was arrested in January 2022 after being accused of attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and was charged in October that year. The charges were subsequently dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service when there was “no longer a realistic prospect of conviction”.

United have now determined that Greenwood will no longer play for the club following a furious backlash against a proposed reintegration, although the 13-time Premier League winners stopped short of terminating his contract.

“All those involved, including Mason, recognise the difficulties with him recommencing his career at Manchester United,” United posted in a statement on their official website. “It has therefore been mutually agreed that it would be most appropriate for him to do so away from Old Trafford, and we will now work with Mason to achieve that outcome.”

90min understands that United would prefer to sell Greenwood because his homegrown player status would provide a huge boost when it comes to Financial Fair Play calculations. But the teams that have shown an interest in Greenwood are more geared towards offering a loan deal as it stands, especially those based in Europe.

Roma, managed by former United boss Jose Mourinho, are one club believed to be ready to give Greenwood a chance to kick-start his career. The pair know each other from the former’s time at Old Trafford and it was Mourinho who promoted Greenwood to United’s first-team squad for the first time.

Greenwood could fill the void left up front by Tammy Abraham’s long-term knee injury, further strengthening the club’s English contingent that also contains former United defender Chris Smalling.

Atalanta, who spoke to Greenwood earlier this summer over a potential loan, are also keen alongside Inter, who need to sign a striker after failing to secure deals for Romelu Lukaku and Folarin Balogun.

Monaco, as well as clubs in Germany and Spain, are also thought to be taking an interest in Greenwood, while Saudi Pro League director of football Michael Emenalo is also keeping an eye on proceedings.
