Soweto Gospel Choir wins third Grammy

South Africa’s Soweto Gospel Choir has just won a third Grammy, winning the ‘Best World Music’ category at the prestigious music awards in Los Angeles for their album FREEDOM.

The popular group have been nominated a total of five times.

This win means it’s back to back triumphs for groups from South Africa in the ‘Best World Music’ category with Ladysmith Black Mambazo winning their fifth Grammy last year.

The Soweto Gospel Choir already bagged two Grammys – in 2007 for  “Blessed” and 2008 for “African Spirit” in the Traditional World Music Album category, missing out in 2011 and in 2009 when they received similar nominations.

Other nominees who missed out in the category included Seun Kuti and Egypt 80 for Black Times, Fatoumata Diawara for Fenfo, Bombino for Deran and Yiddish Glory for The Lost Songs of World War II.

The Choir has previously indicated that the album FREEDOM honoured former President Nelson Mandela while conveying a strong message about the history of South Africa.
