The District Chief Executive (DCE) for West Gonja District, Saeed Muhazu Jibril has stopped water tankers from supplying residents of Damongo with water from the main source of water following a change in colour and continues demise of water species in the dam.
Report has that, Many residents of the Savannah regional capital believe the dam might have been poisoned for the second time by some fisherfolks resulting in the contamination of the water. Others are of the belief that pesticides used by farmers around the dam might have leached into the reservoir.
The DCE, therefore, halted the water supplies by the tanker operators in order to prevent an outbreak of water-borne infections in Damongo.
Meanwhile, there is an acute water shortage in the area for the past two days with residents travelling to nearby communities in search of water for domestic use.
The contaminated dam, built-in 1963, has been the source of water for farmers and residents in the Damongo district.
