The Tema General Hospital has responded to a viral video showing its Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) in total darkness with babies struggling in incubators following a power outage on March 26, 2024.

However, the hospital in a statement signed by the Medical Director Dr. Richard Anthony, dated March 27, 2024, clarified that it was only a brief generator trip-off.

The hospital also confirmed the incident and explained that “the power from the national grid was interrupted and the Facility was relying on its power plant”.

“The dedicated generator set to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) tripped off for a short period and the hospital’s electricians worked to restore power to the Unit until the national grid was restored” the statement added.

Fortunately, no lives were lost as a result of the power outage.

When the video popped up on social media, celebrities like ‘NPP’ tagged personality Sarkodie expressed his disappointment over the situation, blaming it on misplaced priorities by the country.
