(VIDEO) Heavy losses as fire engulfs Commonwealth Hall

A fire outbreak on Tuesday, June 4, 2024, destroyed a section of the Commonwealth Hall at the University of Ghana, Legon.

The flames destroyed one of the Commonwealth Towers and other properties inside the building.

Videos from the scene show the flames blazing at the very top of the building at the amphitheatre.

According to Lydia Alhassan, Member of Parliament (MP) for Ayawaso West Wuogon, firefighters from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) responded quickly and successfully quenched the fire.

She added that no casualties were reported and assured of the safety of the students.

Meanwhile, the GNFS has launched an investigation into the incident.

Although the cause of the fire was not immediately known, some residents alleged an electrical fault caused it.

In February 2024, another fire outbreak on the Legon campus affected two offices at the Mfodwo Complex, popularly called N-Block.
