Violent suspect shot after stabbing two cops at Kantamanto

Two police officers are receiving treatment after a suspected criminal stabbed them at Kantamanto, a commercial business area in Accra.

The cops were deployed at about 11 am on Thursday, to arrest the suspect, Moses Asamoah. The violent man pulled a knife from his back pocket in the process and attacked the police officers. He stabbed one officer in the head and arm, while the other sustained deep cuts to his jaw.

Accra Regional Police PRO, DSP Effia Tenge, told Joy News that the police shot the suspect as he attempted to “stab a third officer” to immobilise him.

She was, however, silent on the injuries the suspect sustained after being shot.

The police contained the situation, although allies of the suspect attempted to mobilise and attack police officers at the scene.

DSP Tenge said police received a distress call from the mother of the suspect that the son had come to her demanding some money. The woman said it was about the second or third time he requested money, which was not used for any productive venture. The suspect made every attempt to extract the money, including using physical force. Sensing danger, the woman called the police to come to her aid.

Unknown to the police who arrived at the scene, the suspect had a knife, and “without provocation or confrontation” he launched an assault on the law enforcement officers, DSP Tenge narrated.

The incident left the officer bleeding profusely. All three injured people, including the suspect, are receiving treatment at the hospital.

The police spokesperson described the action by the mob as “uncivilised” as they require the public to support the police when they were performing their lawful duty.

There have been multiple reports of civilian attacks on police, with the most recent being a vehicle driver who knocked and killed a cop who tried to stop a driver who had committed several road traffic offences.

The police have indicated that they will not spare anyone who crosses the line to assault its personnel.
