We are making strides in TVET advancement – Commission

Ghana is on course to building centres of excellence in technical universities and TVET institutions in all regional capitals.

The move is to help propel Ghana beyond foreign aid through industry-led and demand-driven competent-based training for the country’s growing youthful population.

Mr Peter Antwi Boasiako, Deputy Director-General of Commission for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), said this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), reiterating that the government was determined to reposition the country as a hub of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) workforce in the West African Sub-region.

“Today, each technical university in the country has a new Amatrol and Avic laboratories and a state-of-the-art training workshop, built and equipped with modern equipment,” Mr Boasiako said.

The Deputy Director said TVET centres of excellence would make Ghana the hub, and that “TVET is an efficient way to up-skill employees and increase productivity for the industry.

“For individuals, TVET is an effective means to raise incomes in both formal and informal economies.”

Mr Boasiako said the already existing practical workshops at the engineering faculties of TVET institutions were retooled and equipped and new simulation laboratories put up.

He said students could carry out simulations on their respective topics at the labs and enhance their scientific research and analytical decision-making skills in a controlled and conceptualized environment.

Mr Boasiako said during his adaptation tour and monitoring of the recent Nov/Dec Examination in Technical Universities and TVET Institutions in Kumasi, Sunyani, Tamale, Bolgatanga and Wa, showed that infrastructural development had advanced.

The government has announced investments of $1 billion in technical and vocational education and training (TVET) infrastructure over the last four years.

It, among other things, expands infrastructure and provides modern equipment for the technical universities as well as upgrade 34 National Vocational Training Institutions and create skills development centres and training of instructors.
