Ghana Football Association has announced an increase in the prize money for the champions of the Ghana Premier League in the upcoming 2023/24 league season.

This was disclosed at the launch of the new league campaign, held at the Eastern Premier Hotel in Koforidua, Eastern Region.

According to the football governing body, the winner of the 2023/24 league season will receive GH¢500,000 as the prize money, together with a trophy and 40 medals.

The second-placed team will be awarded GH¢200,000, and the third-placed team will receive GH¢100,000.

The president of the FA, Kurt Okraku in his speech elaborated on the new development revealing that the upcoming season’s campaign will see the clubs that finish from 4th to 10th also being awarded some cash prize at the end of the campaign.

“To increase the competitiveness of the league, the Ghana Football Association will reward from the first to the 10th place in the 2023/24 betPawa Premier League,” he said.

The GFA has over the years received criticism on the prize money from the football community with the recent being the last season when reigning champions, Medeama Sporting Club were awarded GH¢300,000 which was a slight increment of what Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko had received in 2020/21 and 2021/22  season respectively.

Both teams received a cash prize of GH¢250,000 for winning the league which people felt the amount was too small and was not befitting of the best team in Ghana.
