The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has destooled the queenmother of the Offinso Traditional Area, Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko over gross insubordination.
This was announced on Thursday, January 11, 2024, during the inaugural Asanteman Traditional Council meeting for the year.
She was destooled following her incessant refusal to appear before Otumfuo after several summons over a series of misconduct.
A move the Asantehene described as gross insubordination.
When the new Offinsomanhene, Nana Dwamena Akenten II, appeared before the Asanteman Council to swear an oath of allegiance, Otumfuo tasked him to look for a new candidate to replace Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko.
He said he wants a candidate who can smoothly work with the newly enstooled Omanhene.
A candidate who will be willing to cooperate and respond to summons from the Manhyia Palace without giving excuses.
“I deliver the town into your hands alone. You have no queenmother. Find a new queen mother to help you undertake your mandate when you have settled down. We need a queenmother who will be present here when we need her,” Otumfuo said.
Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko together with other kingmakers had nominated the former Board Chairman of Asante Kotoko Sporting Club, Dr Desmond Kofi Koduah Sarpong, to assume the position of Offinsomanhene after the demise of Nana Wiafe Akenten III.
However, there was a vehement protest from the other faction of kingmakers, with claims that the nominee did not belong to a royal family.
Consequently, the Asante Traditional Council constituted a committee to probe the allegation.
The committee found that Dr K.K Sarpong who was presented by the queenmother to occupy the stool was not related to the Ahyirem Royal Family.
The matter dragged on until the Asantehene tasked the head of the family to take over and look for a candidate.
The proposed candidate, Nana Amoako Poku was accepted by the royal family and the Manhyia Palace and he was subsequently enstooled with the stool name, Nana Dwamena Akenten II.
