A 34-year-old electrician has been sentenced to seven years in prison by the Jasikan Circuit Court in the Oti Region for defiling a nine-year-old girl.
Although the convict, Lodonu Kwasi, pleaded not guilty to the crime, he was convicted based on the findings of a police investigation.
According to the prosecution, the convict, originally from Klikor in the Volta Region, was working in Pusupu, a suburb of the Nkwanta South Municipality in the Oti Region, when the incident occurred on October 8, 2020.
The detective explained that on that day, Lodonu lured the victim into his room under the guise of sending her on an errand. When the victim returned home, she was bleeding and experiencing difficulty walking.
The mother of the victim promptly reported the case to the police at Brewaniase, and the victim was provided with a police form to seek medical attention.
The medical report confirmed that there had been penetration.
Subsequently, the convict was arrested, and investigations revealed his involvement, leading to his conviction and subsequent sentencing.
The court’s decision to hand down a seven-year imprisonment term serves as a stern message to perpetrators of such heinous crimes and sends a signal that such acts will not be tolerated in society.
The judgment also underscores the importance of prompt reporting and thorough investigations to ensure justice is served in sexual offences against minors.
