Source The Ghana Report

The Kasoa Divisional Police Command has been accused of killing a 23-year-old man in custody after being arrested in connection with the Kasoa Big Man Town Robbery.

The family say the deceased, Gordon Okai, was innocent and therefore calling on the Inspector-General of Police to investigate the death thoroughly.

On the afternoon of December 20, 2022, a mobile money vendor was shot by three armed robbers, and an undisclosed amount of money was taken away by the robbers who were on a motorbike at Kasoa Big man Town.

Subsequently, the case was reported to the Kasoa Police Station for investigation.

According to the family members of the deceased, police broke into the room of Gordon on the night of December 23 to arrest him but failed to disclose which particular police station they took him to.

They say all efforts to locate the deceased proved futile as the police officers kept directing them to the wrong stations, including the police headquarters.

However, a police team reached out to them on Tuesday, December 27, 2022, and invited them to the Kasoa Divisional Police Command, where they were informed that Godfred had fallen ill and died whilst in custody.

The mother of the victim, Anna Dugan, believes that his son might have suffered police brutality leading to his death.

The family said it would not relent in its pursuit of justice for their relative since the suspect is innocent of the allegations against him.

The body of the deceased has been deposited at the police mortuary for autopsy and preservation.

Meanwhile, efforts made to reach the police to respond to the issue have been unsuccessful.

It would be recalled that a 25-year-old mobile money vendor was left in critical condition after suspected armed men attacked him at Kasoa Big Man Town near Poolside Hotel in the Awutu Senya East Municipality of the Central Region.

The three robbers, armed with pump action guns and a pistol, attacked the victim, Kelvin Nii Kpakpo, while doing his everyday transactions around 1:00 pm Tuesday, December 20, 2022.

They took away an undisclosed amount of money.

Eyewitnesses said the assailants, aged 18 -20 years, were firing indiscriminately, resulting in a bullet hitting the victim, seriously injuring him.

He was subsequently rushed to the Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital for medical attention.

Fortunately, images of the robbers were captured by CCTV cameras at the Hotel.
