FDA destroys two 40-foot containers of cancer-causing baby diapers

Source The Ghana Report

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has destroyed two 40-foot container loads of substandard baby diapers imported into the country at Atadeka in the Kpone Katamanso Municipality.

FDA confiscated the items from various markets around Accra during market surveillance exercises in the region from January 2024.

According to the Head of the Enforcement Directorate of the FDA, Vigil Edward Prah-Ashun, this is to curtail the negative implications of these substandard products on the health and well-being of babies and children.

Mr Prah-Ashun explained that a baby girl who uses these could pick up an infection, which could develop into cases of infertility in adulthood.

The boys could also develop cancer of the testes based on the chemicals used in producing the substandard baby diapers.

He said that the authority had warned the public about an increase in the importation of unregistered diapers into Ghana.

He said a joint statement released in July 2023 by the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), the FDA, and the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) had given businesses until December 2023 to regularise their activities.

However, he said that during their routine market monitoring at the beginning of the year, they realized there had been an influx of these products that did not meet the regulatory, packaging, and labelling standards.
