Heathrow Airport metal detector ‘catches’ Ghanaian who wore 7 clothes to avoid excess luggage fee

To avoid paying for excess luggage charges for overweight items, this Ghanaian passenger who was travelling through Heathrow Airport in the United Kingdom to Accra in Ghana opted to wear seven layers of clothing.

It was the metal detector that drew attention to his layers of clothing.

He explained he had multiple layers of clothing on because of the cold weather, but the security said the excess luggage for an overweight charge was a possible reason.

One of the clothing in the layers had a metal button and so the metal detector triggered.

But the security officials could not immediately locate the metal button.

When he was asked why he had three shirts on, his response was “It is the [cold] weather.”

The unusual dressing aroused suspicion and so the security officials took him to a private place for a search.

A more intimate search was conducted in a side room.

With so many layers of the shirt on, security couldn’t determine what was setting off the metal detector.

“The weather is too cold,” he said repeatedly.

When he was asked if he was flying to Nigeria, he quickly responded, “daabi, daabi, Ghana, I come from Ghana.”

The officials were able to determine that there was nothing sinister setting off the detector rather than metal buttons.

They thanked him for his patience and allowed him to move on.

I think it’s a sensible way of beating the system. Next time, he should wear clothes without metal on them. One can choose to wear as many clothes as he likes if there is no health hazard.

Disaster of destroying Nija image. Why should they think he was going to Nija? If he was , sure he would have been further delayed.

True. That is pure discrimination against our Nigerian neighbours.

News portals and the crap they put out!!! Although the man in the story stated his reason for wearing multiple shirts because of the cold weather, notice how his side of the story has been so prejudicially dismissed in favor of the “explanation” of the security officials who searched the man. And what is the basis for this slant given to this story??? None, whatsoever!

You need to put your glasses on! That man is clearly a Ghanaian from that photo. That’s how Ghanaian dark men look and the face! Clearly a Ghanaian.

Look at his face closely and zoom in the picture if you can. That man is not a Nigerian. And let face it he has committed no crime.

Olu, I don’t like the assumption the man is a Nigerian, but, what and how many clothings people wear at a time is not a crime.

  9. Joseph Otoo Egyir says

This is not new thing. People used to do it because of the excess luggage. I have been seeing a couple of people who have been putting on multiple of shirt for this reason at Marco polo airport in vienice ltaly. Excess of luggage.

And it not a criminal or anything to be ashamed of, what’s annoying is that the security people automatically believe he’s a Nigerian when he’s not!

  10. OLU A says

What caught my attention is that the airport security automatically thought he’s a Nigerian. Hence, they asked him if he’s a Nigerian. The reason why it’s easy for non-Nigerians to commit crime but claim to be Nigerians when they are caught by authorities. Please note that l am not saying the man is a criminal. I am point out the fact that not some African criminals who are not Nigerian claim to be Nigerians. If the man had not identified himself as a Ghanaian and had identified himself as a Nigerian they would have believed him. There are people who commit crimes claiming to be Nigerians when they are not.

He hasn’t committed any crime nor does he have anything to be ashamed of. He paid for his flight, people find different ways to hide those excess luggage. That said he’s clearly not a Nigerian from that photo. And Nigerians probably the biggest traveller in Africa, hence the first country that came to the security people mind.

He can chose to wear any number of clothes that he wants provided he is comfortable with it

He’s not commited an offence but the security people have committed an offence under the Data Protection Act by publicising his photo. That’s a serious matter.
There are very dark complexion Nigerians so stop saying ‘it’s a dark person so they must be Ghanian.’ Some people hide identity pretending to be from another country. So why say many people pretend to be Nigerian when they’re not. Nigerians don’t do it? Many people from the UK travelling on Easy Jet or Ryan Air, for example, with limited carry on allowance wear several layers to avoid excess baggage. They don’t get humiliated like this. Finally if the man says it’s been cold that’s his prerogative. It has been cold. How many layers he needs is up to him. I wear a wholly hat on night flight from Africa to Europe as the Airlines put the air con on full blast and I always catch a cold. It may seem odd to others but it’s my right to protect my health!
