The newly appointed Majority Leader of Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has revealed that his current position “is a prophecy come true”.

The Member of Parliament for Effutu constituency addressing the House after accepting to lead the majority caucus following the resignation of Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu recalled how the outgoing leader admonished him to adhere to standing orders in Parliament since he might be in his shoes one day.

He also admitted that his journey to becoming a Majority Leader has not been easy but through the assistance of experienced colleagues like Mark Assibey-Yeboah, the late Enoch Teye Mensah popularly known as E.T Mensah, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin, and others, he was able to sail through parliamentary proceedings effortlessly.

“Mr. Speaker, this is a prophecy come true. In my early days, I received a call from Honourable OB Amoah that the leader was traveling to Hanoi, Vietnam and he was to go with him but for some reason, he couldn’t make it and he requested that I join the leader in his stead.

“Mr. Speaker, upon arrival in Hanoi, one of the nights, Hon. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu had a good discussion with me and he advised me to stay close to the standing orders and as he realized many people don’t pay attention to the standing orders. He added, if you do it well, and you discipline yourself perhaps you may succeed me. You may never know.

He added; “Mr. Speaker, when we got to Kenya, for a long transit, again had this conversation and in this conversation, he repeated the same. Today is the day”.

Meanwhile, Mr. Afenyo-Markin has called upon the Minority Caucus in Parliament to strengthen its bipartisan efforts with the Majority Caucus, emphasizing the mutual benefits such collaboration can yield.

The National Council of the New Patriotic Party on Friday confirmed the new leadership of the majority caucus in Parliament as Alexander Afenyo-Markin, MP for Effutu takes on the mantle of Majority Leader starting today, Friday, February 23.

Patricia Appiagyei, MP for Kumasi Asokwa, deputizes him.

The other leaders are the MP for Nsawam/Adoagyiri, Frank Annoh Dompreh, who maintains his position as the Majority Chief Whip.

Habib Iddrisu, MP for Tolon, and Alex Tetteh Djornobuah, MP for Sefwi Akontombra also maintain their roles as First and Second Deputy Majority Whips.
