Kurt Okraku calls on Ghana Police to end hooligans in football

President of the Ghana Football Association, Kurt Okraku, has charged the Ghana Police Service to clamp down on football hooliganism.

Ghana football has, over the years, had its share of high-profile cases of hooliganism, a criminal offence.

The FA president said such acts could be wiped out from football if the police arrest and prosecute offenders.

His comments follow the assault of some match officials at Wamanafo CAM Park in a Division One League game between Wamanafo Mighty Royals and Tano Bofoakwa.

According to reports, fans of the home side, Mighty Royals, were unhappy by the referees’ performance and vented their anger for perceived unfair officiating.

Viral social media videos showed the helpless officials mobbed by the fans who did not hold back in launching a physical assault, leaving the officials bloody and bruised.

The second-tier side and two officials of the club, Daniel Asante and assistant coach Stephen Gurah are currently facing six charges of misconduct after the incident.

Mr Okraku finds this appalling.

“This is not acceptable, I have seen referees make horrendous decisions in well-established jurisdictions, people don’t shed blood, people don’t throw stones.” He said in an interview with Joy Sports.

“Sorry I am not the IGP, sorry I am not the Police Commander.

“A week ago the police were attacked by supporters during a game between Techiman City versus Tamale City.

“I expect the police service to act and it is one of the key reasons I am moving to the Brong Ahafo region to meet the police high command.” Kurt continued.

“So it isn’t about the FA not being interested, we are interested and we want people who flout the laws to face the full rigorous of the law.

“If club officers misbehave, they will face the football court and that’s what we stand for.

“We will never, never accept hooliganism in our sport because hooliganism belongs to the stone-age.”
