‘Onua dor’ vans are not fit for purpose – Oppong Nkrumah replies Minority

The Minister of Information Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has responded to the Minority’s claims that the Nana Akufo-Addo government has abandoned mobile clinic vans procured during the Mahama administration.

According to him, the vans are not fit for purpose.

“Onua dor vans are not ambulances, in any case, they are not fit for purpose, they are unmotorable,” he said in an interview with Citi FM monitored by theghanareport.com

Ranking member on Parliament’s Health Committee, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh today paid a visit to the Korle Bu Hospital where eight of the ‘onua dor’ vans have been left under poor wealth conditions to rot away.

“These vans were brought into the country six years ago and they were deployed to the ‘hard-to-reach’ areas to provide services but unfortunately for more than 3 years, these vans have been packed here and it’s rotting away.”

“We need them in the hinterlands. We entered one of the vans and the interior was chilled, it means the air conditioner is working, so why are they packed here,” he quizzed

Mr Akandoh observed the air-conditions in the cars are functional and therefore he expects the government to put the vans to use.

But the Information Minister insists the vans are not fit for purpose

‘They imported empty Mercedes Benz as mobile clinic” he said.

President John Dramani Mahama on September 16 2015, launched a National Medical Outreach Services dubbed “Onuador” as a means of bringing healthcare to the doorsteps of Ghanaians.

It was employed by the Ministry of Health to close the equity gap in healthcare delivery in the country.

The Mobile Clinic service was also to cater for general medical care, dentistry, ophthalmology and audiology.

During outreach exercises, the medial team was expected among others to provide interactive health education in communities to promote a healthy lifestyle and prevent diseases.

The team is also expected to provide emergency treatment to members of the community who would require such services as well as offer screening and treatment for general medical conditions, ophthalmology, dentistry, and hearing.

But not much was heard of the facilities after their launch.

All the eight vehicles have been abandoned on the premises of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

Oh Ghana how can this minister be ignorant like that the said vans are not Mercedes Benz they are ford so it means he don’t have an idea. “They imported empty Mercedes Benz as mobile clinic” he said. As copied from his answer. Even I know it was working in early 2017.

I never thought intelligent people can change and become irrational because of politics. I thought Kojo Opong Nkruman was a gentleman and be honest with himself and Ghanaians.
