Some military officers have reportedly brutalised residents of Ashaiman in the Greater Accra Region following the death of a 22-year-old soldier in the area.

According to reports, the young soldier, attached to the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) band in Sunyani in the Bono Region, was stabbed several times by unknown attackers in the early hours of Saturday, March 4.

Following news of his death, some colleagues of the deceased stormed Ashaiman in the early hours of Tuesday, March 7, causing residents to flee the scene.

They besieged the area with armoured vehicles and helicopters circling over the town.

The officers subjected some residents to severe flogging and forced others to roll on the ground in the muddy puddles of the early morning rains.

Eyewitness accounts say the area has become a ghost town as the terrified residents have put all activities on hold.

Meanwhile, some residents who have taken cover in their homes have taken to social media to share pictures and videos of the happenings.

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) is yet to comment on the issue.

However, the Member of Parliament for Ashaiman, Ernest Norgbey, has lamented the situation.

He said, “They can be peeved because one of their own is gone, but brutalising people is not the solution to this problem.”
