Why It’s So Important To Focus

This time last year, my schedule was all over the place. I was running in circles from one job to another; I remember waking up in the morning, running to my job school, and then commuting to my other job. I had zero focus.

I was so busy at the time. At first glance, it seemed that everything was coming together because I was just doing so much at once. After all, society tends to stress the importance of staying busy.

However, I did not realize until now that I was so unfocused.

I simply didn’t know what my goals were. I would just take on specific tasks for the sake of completing them. When it came to work, I would just take specific jobs to save enough money to pay rent.

And when it came to school, I would not put my full effort and time into my assignments or listen to class. The courses were easy; I needed to listen to the lecture and submit an assignment according to the course concepts.

However, I lost my interest and my passion.

I started to lose sight of who I was and what I genuinely liked. I was just trying to scrape by to earn money. I wanted to present myself in a certain manner – to be accepted by others.

Then, this all changed within the next year or so.

It started with changing what I studied; I simply learned a field I never envisioned myself studying. Then, as I continued to dive deep into the course material, I became more focused on school.

I studied and reviewed my material and assignments almost every night, ensuring that I understood the key concepts and prepared for lectures. I also ensured that I studied ahead; sometimes, before I attended a lecture, I would skim the material beforehand to understand the course content.

Then, I started to take on fewer shifts at work. I dropped some shifts and decided to give some of them to my colleagues. This allowed me to focus more on my schoolwork and my studies.

After the semester ended, I noticed a drastic change. When I started focusing, I learned to prioritize and manage my time. This also translated into better results—I was more productive and allocated my time properly to certain matters.

I also started to develop a healthier relationship with myself; I would review my self-care habits and ensure that I check in with my emotions and thoughts.

With focus, I noticed a difference in emotions and discipline. With focus, I saw a shift in perception: I noticed that perhaps reaching my goals can be possible and that, in the end, everything will work out in its way.
